Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, 1st Marqués de Dalí de Pubol also knows as Salvador Dali was born on May 11, 1904. He was born in Spain. His father was a lawyer and notary. They were a middle class family so Dali did not grow up in terrible poverty. But their family was by no means rich. He was born near the French Spanish border. His mother was the one who got Dali to become an artist. Dali had an other brother by the same name that died nine months after he was born. When he was five his parents told Dali that he was the reincarnation of his older brother who died and he believed it throughout his life. He ended up making a painting about what happened called Portrait of My Dead Brother. Dali played soccer with two of his friends when he was a kid that grew up to play for the best and greatest football team in the world FC Barcelona. In 1916 Dali went to drawing school. He took a trip to Pairs over the summer where he discovered modern painting. His father had an exhibit of Dali's drawings put up in their home but then in 1919 he had his first public exhibit . In 1921 Dali's mother died of breast cancer. This changed his life forever. He was very attached to his mother and the blow really hurt Dali. His father married his dead wife's sister. Surprisingly Dali didn't have a problem with the marriage because he respected his aunt. In 1922 Dali moved to Madrid to study art. Dali had a certain style that most people didn't have in the 1920's. Dali tried Cubism and because there were no other Cubism artists in Madrid Dali illustrated a book. After that Dali experimented with Dada. Dada influenced his work throughout his life. In 1926 Dali was expelled from school for starting a riot or demonstration. In 1926 Dali went to Paris where he met Pablo Picasso. This would change his life forever. Picasso influenced Dali's work. Dali started his own style when he met Picasso. Dali used classic and modernistic techniques when he painted. Dali's works were famous and the public was unsure how to react to the artwork. In 1929 Dali made a short video and met his wife the same year in August. She was a Russian immigrant and was ten years older than Dali. Dali joined a surrealist group in Pairs. His father did not approve of the relationship of Dali being associated with surrealism. Dali got kicked out of his house and had to live in a small fishing cabin. Dali got married in 1934. His wife was also his business manager. Dali had exhibits in New York and came to them in weird outfits. There was a "Dali Ball" Over the next few years Dali took part in many different Surrealist exhibits and meetings. In 1940 World War II was in full swing and Dali and his wife moved to America. In 1942 Dali published his autobiography. In 1949 Dali moved back to Spain. In 1959 they celebrated the 40th anniversary of surrealism. Late in his career Dali started trying different form of art.
Impact On Arthur Pearcy's THinking
Dali affect Arthur Pearcy's thinking about art a lot after studying him. His surrealist art was changed everything for him. Finally art was becoming abstract and that really changed his outlook on art. He was finally able to accept the surrealist art. Before this he like more of the realism. But after looking at Dali's work changed what he considered good artwork. Finally he was able to accepted more abstract artwork and artwork that he could exactly understand.
